Party Central Committee Secretary Truong Tan Sang was speaking at the fourth congress of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO) in Hanoi on Dec.18.

In the nation’s renewal process and its process of international economic integration, it is important for the Vietnamese people to attract support, solidarity and cooperation from other countries, Sang said.

He affirmed that VUFO has played a significant role in increasing the country’s relationship and level of cooperation with other nations around the world.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem called on VUFO to maximise its specific advantages and to work alongside external relations agencies of the Party and State to translate this national foreign policy into actions, as the country has so far established diplomatic ties with close to 180 countries and almost all international organisations.

During the 2003-08 period, VUFO has established friendship associations with border provinces in neighbouring countries and conducted a variety of bilateral and multilateral exchange programmes and activities with partners in other ASEAN member countries as well as other nations.

The organisation has taken an active part in mobilising partner organisations and individuals to tackle the aftermath of recent wars, particularly the Agent Orange/dioxin issue.

Between 2003 and 2008, VUFO has mobilised non-governmental foreign aid of 1.1 billion USD, which has been used to fight poverty, mitigate the impacts of natural disasters, and address the consequences of war.

During the congress, Vu Xuan Hong was re-elected as VUFO president for the 2008-2013 term.
