VietNamNet Bridge - Viet Nam supports comprehensive and lasting political solution to Dafur conflict and highly appreciates the ongoing mediation efforts by the UN-AU Joint Chief Mediator, the AU, the Arab League and Qatar in reviving the Darfur political process.

At a meeting of the UN Security Council on the UN-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) in New York on Dec. 19, Vietnamese Deputy Representative to the UN, Ambassador Bui The Giang expressed concern that the security and humanitarian situation as well as the peacekeeping mission in Darfur are all still facing daunting challenges.

He commended the recent positive steps taken in Chad-Sudan relations such as their recent exchange of Ambassadors, the Sudanese Government’s decision to declare a unilateral ceasefire, launch the Sudan People’s Initiative (SPI) and extend the Moratorium on humanitarian access.

He said if effectively implemented and further promoted, those steps will contribute to the improvement of the security and humanitarian situation in Darfur and the subregion.

The Ambassador particularly praised the announcement made by the Sudanese Foreign Minister on the Government’s readiness to conclude a final peace agreement with the rebel movements.

Giang also called on all the parties concerned to demonstrate their political will by joining the political process without any precondition and respond positively to the SPI.

Reaffirming Vietnam ’s support for the full and prompt deployment of UNAMID, Giang highly appreciated UNAMID’s contributions to improving the security and humanitarian situation in Darfur , especially in carrying out confidence-building patrols, monitoring human rights-violation and facilitating humanitarian access.

He said that the tri-partite mechanism between the Sudanese Government, the AU and the UN in UNAMID’s deployment will be more effectively implemented, thereby promoting UNAMID’s full deployment.

He welcomed the encouraging cooperative activities in the tri-partite mechanism between the Sudanese Government, the AU and the UN since last October and hoped that it would expedite UNAMID’s full deployment.
