Government, NA leaders remember Uncle Ho

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung burned incense at the relic site dedicated to late President Ho Chi Minh to pay his respects to Uncle Ho on the morning of Jan. 22 to mark the occasion of the upcoming traditional New Year (Tet).

The PM praised the staff at the relic site for their work, maintaining and preserving items connected to Uncle Ho’s life and teaching both domestic and foreign visitors about Ho Chi Minh’s life and causes.

The efforts of the staff have contributed to the success of a national campaign, entitled “Learning and following President Ho Chi Minh’s moral examples,” he said.

That afternoon, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong followed suit, paying his respects to the late president.

Talking with the staff of the relic site, the NA Chairman expressed his hope that the staff will continue to uphold the achievements they have made to help visitors to gain a greater and deeper understanding of Uncle Ho.

Vietnam hails peace process in West Africa

Ambassador Bui The Giang, deputy representative of Vietnam in the UN Security Council (UNSC), said Vietnam hails the initial yet important progress made in consolidating peace and security and promoting national reconciliation and strengthening socio-economic reconstruction in West African countries.

The Vietnamese diplomat made the statement at a meeting of the UN Office in West Africa (UNOWA), saying that he was pleased to note the progress in the sub-region, particularly in Sierra, Leone, Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea Bissau and Liberia.

He said Vietnam shares the concerns about daunting challenges that West African nations continue to confront with, including poverty, cooking insecurity, unemployment, organized crimes, illicit trafficking in light weapons and other cross-cutting problems.

In dealing with these challenges, especially against the backdrop of adverse impacts of the global financial and food crises, the ambassador said Vietnam supports the important role played by the UN, the Peacebuilding Commission, the AU, ECOWAS and UNOWA in jointly assisting the West African nations in promoting post-conflict peacebuilding efforts, tackling cross-border challenges and addressing socio-economic priorioties in their respective phase of development.

He also proposed that UNOWA continue its efforts in coordinating UN activities in the sub-region to ensure their improved coherence and maximum efficiency and avoid possible duplications of resources.

Vietnam helps train Lao senior officers

A postgraduate course was opened at the Ho Chi Minh National Institute of Politics and Administration in Hanoi on Jan. 22 for high-ranking leaders of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP).

During the in-service course, students will study political and economic subjects, and Ho Chi Minh thoughts.

The institute’s director, Prof. Dr. Le Huu Nghia, said he expected the course would provide students with knowledge necessary for the improvement of their leadership capacity to meet the requirements of globalisation.

On behalf of students, Bouthong Chitmani, secretary of the LPRP Central Committee, thanked the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Institute for training LPRP officers over the past years, which, he said, is a manifestation of the close ties between the two countries’ Parties, States and people.
