VietNamNet BridgeA Vietnamese representative to the UN Security Council has called upon all parties to armed conflicts in Gaza Strip to take effective measures to protect civilians, especially most vulnerable groups such as children and women.

Ambassador Le Luong Minh.
At the Council’s Open Debate on Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict, which took place in New York on Jan. 14, Ambassador Le Luong Minh raised concerned about the fact that in many places, civilians continue to be main victims of acts of violence and indiscriminate and excessive use of force.

“With armed conflicts spreading and escalating in many parts of the world, enhancing protection of civilians has become more urgent and important than ever before,” he said.

All indiscriminate attacks against civilians are unjustifiable under any pretext, Minh said, calling upon all concerned parties to minimise military activities in and around civil locations.

The Ambassador urged parties concerned to cease fire and put and end to acts of violence and implement measures stipulated in Resolution 1860 adopted by the Council on Jan. 8, including the opening of border crossings to allow and facilitate humanitarian assistance.

The diplomat also said the UN should play its critical role by providing political mediation and peacekeeping operations, as well as by coordinating humanitarian and development assistance.

The Vietnamese Government has decided to grant 200,000 USD in emergent humanitarian aid to the Palestinians in Gaza, he noted.
