Vietnam undertook its first presidency of the World Disarmament Conference (WDC) Monday, the government website said.

The website said it was an opportunity for the country to assert its role in implementing multilateral policies for international relations.

“It’s also a great challenge for Vietnam,” Le Hoai Trung, head of the International Organizations Department under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said.

In its new role, Vietnam must cooperate with other countries and the United Nations to draft a working program for 2009 including a review of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Established in 1979, WDC has 65 members.
