LookAtVietnam – Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister, Nguyen Sinh Hung, met with James Adam, the World Bank (WB)’s vice president of the east Asia- Pacific region, at the Government Office in Hanoi on Feb. 17.

The Deputy PM expressed his satisfaction at the cooperation between Vietnam and the WB and praised its recent assistance to Vietnam, particularly in the field of poverty reduction.

Regarding Vietnam’s economic situation, Hung said that his country has succeeded in tackling inflation, however the national economy is slowing down.

The Vietnamese Government is focusing on preventing deflation, following the market model, stabilising the macro-economy and ensuring social security, he said.

Whenever the economy faces difficulties, it is vital to help the poor and ensure the development of agriculture and rural areas in order to improve the living standards of the nation’s farmers, the Deputy PM remarked, hoping for more assistance from the WB to facilitate the nation’s development.

The WB official described the current global economic crisis as a huge challenge, not just for Vietnam but the whole world.

He predicted that, in the near future, it will become increasingly difficult to make effective decisions, as any solutions to the crisis would need time to prove their effectiveness, yet it is impossible to forecast how long the crisis would last for.

The WB now has a huge pool of resources that could prove useful for Vietnam’s stimulus packages if they are effectively employed, Adam said. Vietnam should continue its process of administrative reform to ensure that it is easier for those resources to be realised, he said.

During their meeting, Adam took the opportunity to introduce the WB’s new country director in Vietnam, Victoria Kwakwa to the deputy PM.

Kwakwa expressed her happiness at returning to Vietnam after ten years and said that she was impressed with Vietnam’s achievements during that time.

She pledged that the WB would continue its assistance to Vietnam and will work closely alongside the country in specific fields that have been deemed areas of need, including minimising the negative impacts of urbanisation, environmental protection measures, improving the quality of Vietnam’s human resources and working to ensure continued social security.
