Germany will continue to maintain its official development assistance (ODA) to Vietnam to help the country gain more successes in its reform and poverty alleviation efforts, a senior German official said Friday.

State Secretary of the Federal Foreign Office, Peter Ammon, made the statement during a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem in Hanoi Friday.

Germany wants to enhance its cooperation with Vietnam at multilateral forums, particularly the United Nations, the government website quoted Ammon as saying.

Khiem hailed Ammon’s visit to Vietnam, which is aimed at further implementation of a number of agreements reached during the visit to Germany by Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung last March, especially in trading, investment and education.

During his three-day visit to Vietnam, which will wrap up today, the two sides agreed to cooperate closely in organizing the “German Year in Vietnam” and “Vietnam Year in Germany” events in 2010 to mark the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The two sides also discussed measures to boost bilateral cooperation in the fields of politics, diploma economics, culture and education.

Ammon confirmed that cooperation in education and training was one of the main priorities for Germany in its relationship with Vietnam. He noted that the German scholarship program has been expanded to allow 100 Vietnamese students each year to pursue master’s and doctorate degrees in Germany.

In the coming years, Germany will further help Vietnam in vocational training and establish a German international high school in Ho Chi Minh City, Ammon said.
