President Nguyen Minh Triet has suggested that Kien Giang province should make full use of its advantages of the lowland, mountainous, marine and island area.

He made this suggestion while working with key leaders of the province on February 26-27.

The President praised the achievements recorded by the province in 2008 and applauded the province’s spirit of criticism and self-criticism in dealing with its weaknesses and shortcomings, and at the same time emphasied that Kien Giang was one of the few provinces in the Mekong River Delta, which recorded good results in the socio-economic development.

However, a problem of great concern is that the province’s speed of the transformation of economic structure is slow and the province’s production value of agro-forestry and marine products is still accounting for over 47% of its gross domestic product. The poor Khmer households rate remains high.

President Triet suggested that in the coming time, the province should focus on the intensive cultivation of high quality rice, promote marine fishing and aquaculture in the direction of industrialisation.

During his visit to Kien Giang, the President visited High Command of Navy Zone 5 stationed at the Phu Quoc island, called on the Association of Sponsoring Poor Patients in Kien Giang and some family enjoying social beneficiaries in Rach Gia city, Chau Thanh and Phu Quoc districts, offered incenses at the temple to the National Hero Nguyen Trung Truc and at the Phu Quoc Martyrs Cemetery, visited the historical site of the Phu Quoc prison.
