The fight against corruption helped boost economic growth, rein in inflation and bring social stability last year, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said.

Dung, who is also head of the Central Anti-Corruption Steering Committee, told the ninth session of the committee he chaired in Hanoi Sunday that breakthroughs were achieved in the fight, helping reduce corruption in a number of spheres.

But he underlined the need to intensify the fight this year.

For the purpose, he said, concerned agencies should quickly enact new laws and regulations to promote transparency in executing public works, including land use, investment and spending by state corporations, and taxation.

He exhorted authorities to make inspections, auditing, and surveillance more efficient to boost the fight against corruption.

Stressing the need to improve coordination between police officers, prosecutors and the courts, he called for accelerating judicial reform, establishing a complete appraisal agency, and improving protection for whistle-blowers.

Members of the committee agreed that “preventing corruption is an urgent task that must be undertaken resolutely and persistently.”
