President Nguyen Minh Triet praised Japan’s special ambassador to Vietnam Sugi Ryotaro for lobbying the Japanese government to continue its halted ODA provisions.

Referring to the PCI scandal that led Japan to suspend its official development assistance (ODA) to Vietnam, President Triet asserted Vietnam’s determination to bring the case to light and deal with those involved in accordance with the law.

The Vietnamese leader also appreciated Ryotaro’s determination in persuading the Japanese government to resume the provision of ODA to Vietnam.

Ryotaro, who is also a Japan-Vietnam goodwill ambassador, said he hoped Vietnam and Japan would work closely together to settle the case quickly.

He added that he would ask the Japanese government to resume ODA provisions to Vietnam as soon as possible.

Receiving the visiting ambassador in Hanoi Wednesday, President Triet stressed that Ryotaro’s activities here have helped bring both spiritual and material assistance to many disadvantaged people in Vietnam.

He also expressed his pleasure to see the ties between the two countries grow in both scale and quality, demonstrated by the successful organization of cultural exchange events that marked the 35th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties last year.
