The completion of the border demarcation and the execution of the Land Border Treaty between Vietnam and China will foster peace and stability in border areas, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem said Monday.

It would also create the right conditions for the development of border areas of both nations, and contribute to peace, stability and development of the region as a whole, Khiem, who is also the Foreign Minister, said.

Khiem was speaking at a government ceremony held at the Huu Nghi (Friendship) international border gate in northern Lang Son Province (known as Youyiguan border gate in China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region).

The ceremony marked the completion of demarcation and planting of markers all along the land border between Vietnam and China.

Khiem said the two countries should further expand their cooperation to sign border-related documents and strengthen friendship exchanges and cooperation in developing the border areas.

For his part, Chinese Party Central Committee member and State Councillor, Dai Bingguo stressed at the ceremony that the Chinese Party and Government attached importance to the bilateral relationship with Vietnam and would, alongside the Vietnamese Party and Government, transform the border into a connection characterized by peace, cooperation and development, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

The two countries started work on demarcating and planting markers in 2001 and completed the work in last December. Almost 2,000 border markers have been planted along the 1,400 km land border.
