The Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan, Nguyen Phu Binh, held a get-together on March 7 for the community of Vietnamese people who are living, studying and working in the country.

The ambassador briefed nearly 50 delegates, representing over 30,000 Vietnamese nationals in the land of the Rising Sun, on the current economic, political and social situation of Vietnam. He stressed that with timely and effective measures by the Party and State, Vietnam has weathered numerous difficulties to maintain a high economic growth rate despite the global financial crunch and unexpectedly high domestic inflation.

Mr Binh expressed pleasure at the strong relations between Vietnam and Japan, clearly shown by the visit to Vietnam by Crown Prince Naruhito last February and the Japanese Government’s recent decision to resume its Official Development Assistance (ODA) to Vietnam. These events, he said, prove Japan’s belief in the Vietnamese Party and State’s efforts to combat corruption.

The Federation of Vietnamese in Japan consists of mostly overseas Vietnamese who arrived in Japan before 1975 and have tirelessly contributed to national defence and construction over the past 40 years. Meanwhile, the Vietnam Youth and Student Association has launched various dynamic activities for youths only. Other Vietnamese associations do not hold frequent activities because they have only a few members who are scattered and busy with their businesses.

Given that, the diplomat expressed his wish that the overseas Vietnamese in Japan would establish an umbrella organization for all Vietnamese groups in the country, and this was unanimously supported by all delegates to the meeting.
