Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has advised the Mekong Delta province of Long An to ensure environmental protection alongside high efficiency of land use in industrial development.

During a visit to several sites in the province Monday, he asked relevant agencies and fertilizer companies to boost agricultural and rural development by supplying good-quality fertilizers at reasonable prices.

Tran Van Muoi, president of the Nam Sao Fertilizer Joint-Stock Corporation promised to produce fertilizers of better quality and sell them at reasonable prices.

Dung asked the province to speed up work on infrastructure projects funded by the 2009 and 2010 budgets. Work should also be expedited on official development assistance (ODA)-funded projects and care taken to prevent negative incidents.

The prime minister stressed the need for Long An to stabilize the lives of residents in locations where they can avoid flooding.

He asked provincial officials to cooperate with the Vietnam Southern Food Corporation (VINAFOOD II ) on the purchase of farm produce, ensuring that farmers can get a profit of at least 30 percent.

A network of warehouses should be built and a system of procurement established where a crisis similar to last year is avoided, he said. Many farmers and shopkeepers had stopped selling rice on fears of a worldwide shortage that proved to be unfounded.
