Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has asked the country’s two leading domestic telecom operators to draw up long-term development strategies to make Vietnam an information technology power.

Meeting with top executives of the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) and the army-run Viettel in Hanoi Friday, he asked them to focus on specific targets and develop human resources, according to the government website.

The government would give them all support, he said.

They need to develop postal and telecoms services more rapidly, build infrastructure to speed up implementation of e-governance and improve their quality and efficiency, he said.

Despite difficulties last year, VNPT and Viettel lowered tariffs, improved their efficiency and earned high profits, Voice of Vietnam quoted PM Dung as saying.

With around 30 million subscribers, Viettel is Vietnam’s largest mobile phone operator and the world’s 41st largest.

VNPT launched the country’s first telecom satellite, VINASAT-1, last year and has signed deals with 16 Vietnamese and 13 foreign customers.
