LookAtVietnam – President Nguyen Minh Triet asked that the People’s Security Forces to emulate Battalion 10 when he named the legendary defenders of the Region Five Viet Nam Communist Party Committee as “Heroes of the People’s Armed Forces” yesterday.

President Nguyen Minh Triet meets residents of Tien Phuoc District in the central province of Quang Nam.

The award had been made to honour the battalion’s loyalty to the Party, the homeland and people during the war for national salvation and the prevailing cause of national construction and defence, he said.

The President said the ceremony in central Quang Nam’s province’s Tra Tan Commune, the Bac Tra My District, provided an opportunity for former commanders, officials and soldiers of the battalion, who had not seen each other for many years, to reunite.

“The soldiers of Battalion 10 were drawn from various localities across the nation, but had been united in the fight for national independence,” the President said.

Battalion 10’s fighting spirit illustrated the revolutionary heroism of the entire Vietnamese nation, including the ethnic minorities living in Tra Mi - Quang Nam and Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands).

The President asked the People’s Security Forces to enhance their tradition and that of Battalion 10 to firmly defend the homeland and contribute to the building of a socialist Viet Nam.

“This is the most precious tradition of the Vietnamese armed forces, of the public security forces and of the entire Vietnamese nation,” he said.

Politburo member and Central Committee secretary Nguyen Van Chi and Deputy Public Security Minister Nguyen The Tiem were among the dignitaries to attend the ceremony.

Tra Tan Commune has become an historical site since the end of the American War and is used to educate young Vietnamese about the heroic tradition of the people’s armed forces in Region Five, the Central Highlands and throughout Viet Nam.

The President, senior Party and government officials also paid homage to the statue of President Ho Chi Minh and Huynh Thuc Khang - a revolutionary leader and statesman in the war against the French colonialists - at his memorial house and the cemetery for war martyrs in Tra My yesterday.
