Vietnam to assume UNSC Presidency for October

The country’s tasks during the month will include preparing the UNSC’s Annual Report for submission to the UN General Assembly and hosting the council’s annual session on women, peace and security, said Le Hoai Trung, Director of the Department for International Organisations under the ministry.

The country will hold negotiations on the future of the UN Missions in Hait , Siera Leon and Liberia as well as chair the council’s regular and irregular meetings, he added.

According to Trung, in the first quarter of this year, Vietnam actively participated in the UNSC meetings and maintained close exchanges and consultations with UNSC members and non-members.

The Southeast Asian country established coordinating relationships with five other non-permanent UNSC members, including Japan, Turkey, Austria, Mexico and Uganda.

Vietnam well performed its role as the Coordinator of the Non-aligned Movement (NAM) countries in the UNSC in January 2009. These countries highly valued Vietnam’s initiative to organise a wide consultation among non-UNSC members on the council’s Annual Report drafted by Vietnam.

The diplomat also said that the relationship between Vietnam and other countries, especially UNSC members, has been continuously strengthened and expanded.

After successful open debates chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem in July 2008 when the country held the UNSC presidency for the first time, Vietnam’s proposal to host an open debate on an issue of international concern during October this year is under consideration, he added.
