Vietnam would closely follow the operations of China’s patrol ship, Yuzheng 311, in the East Sea, Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Dzung told reporters Tuesday.

It has been a week since China sent the ship to the sea, arousing Vietnam’s concerns over the sovereignty of the Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagos.

“Every attempt to exploit resources in the East Sea should respect the rights to maritime sovereignty and jurisdiction of relevant countries in line with international law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea issued in 1982,” said Dzung.

Vietnam has reiterated its tough position on Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos and called for China to follow international law in any attempt to tap East Sea resources, Dung said.

The 113.5-meter-long, 450 ton patrol ship is in charge of maritime patrols in China’s exclusive economic zones, navigation protection and fishery emergencies, according to news.xinhuanet.com.
