Hanoi authorities are hastening projects to mark the millennium of Thang Long-Hanoi in 2010, said Ngo Thi Minh Hang, deputy Chairwoman of Hanoi People’s Committee, at a meeting on April 4.

The meeting was held between the Central Department of Propaganda and Training, the city’s People’s Committee and Vietnam Journalist Association.

Ms. Hang said 19 cultural and social projects, and 15 infrastructure and urban developments have been urged to complete their work soon.

Hanoi recently received a positive response from UNESCO to recognize Thang Long Royal citadel as a World Culture Heritage site.

The city has also started to restore Co Loa relics and the Bach Ma and Voi Phuc temples, and designing Quan Thanh Temple.

Hanoi completed 25 out of it 35 planned projects marking its anniversary by the end of February.

Authorities have finished a detailed events diary for the 10 days of the millennial celebrations. It is now waiting for the Prime Minister’s approval.

Thang Long-Hanoi came into being in the fall of 1010 with King Ly Thai To’s edict to transfer the capitol.

Being one of the oldest capitols in Southeast Asia, the city boasts an uninterrupted millennium, through the many imperial dynasties up to modern Vietnam.
