The government is planning to provide policy support for businesses to train workers in hi-tech areas, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan told a seminar in the southern province of Binh Duong Saturday.

The support will be in the form of land rent and import tax exemptions, said Nhan, who is also the minister of Education and Training.

Nhan said Vietnam should overcome shortcomings in hi-tech human resources training to ensure that the Vietnamese workforce is well- equipped to meet market demands in the near future.

The training should focus on information technology, biotechnology, new materials, automation and energy, Nhan said.

A national conference on hi-tech human resources training would be held annually to effect major changes in the field, he added.

More than 300 delegates attending the seminar heard reports on the demand and use of hi-tech human resources in 2009-2010 and further until 2020.

They discussed the demand for hi-tech manpower in the country and the training centers’ ability to meet it. Twenty cooperation agreements were signed during the seminar.

The seminar, held for the first time by the Ministry of Education and Training and the Ministry of Science and Technology, aimed to help training centers be more aware of the urgent demand for quality hi-tech staff as well as ways to guarantee quality to meet the employers’ requirements.
