The Hanoi People’s Council will question the Hanoi People’s Committee about some projects before and after the expansion of the capital city, said permanent member Le Huy Hoat.

The piece of land set for the construction of the 19/12 Trading Centre.

Hoat said other issues of concern of the Hanoi People’s Council deputies include: management of polluted lakes and rivers, waste treatment and assistance for flood victims.

Another deputy of the Hanoi People’s Council, Vu Duc Tan, said that Hanoi didn’t collect opinions of the local people and experts for some projects resulting in people’s complaints. A typical example is the SAS Hotel project in the Thong Nhat Park, which was cancelled by the Prime Minister. The city authorities may have to compensate the investor for losses.

“If competent agencies did careful research works about the feasibility and made public the project before granting a licence, there would not have had any loss. Hanoi officials have to explain their responsibility and the solution for this case,” Tan said.

There are more than 1,000 projects being implemented in Hanoi. It is said that some projects in Ha Tay (which was merged into Hanoi last year) were licenced though they didn’t meet criteria. Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai instructed Hanoi to check projects licenced before and after the expansion.

Recently, some projects in the heart of Hanoi were complained about for encroaching upon historic sites or public spaces, such as the Trading Centre project on 19/12 road and the SAS Hotel project in Thong Nhat Park. These projects have been halted.
