National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong visited St. Petersburg on April 25 as part of his on-going visit to Russia.

Meeting with Deputy Chairman of the city’s Legislative Assembly, Vatanyar S. Yagya, the Vietnamese NA Chairman reiterated his visit’s aim is to enhance cooperation, exchange and experience sharing between legislative bodies of the two countries, including that of St. Petersburg.

Yagya said St. Petersburg is working with Vietnam’s Hai Phong and Ho Chi Minh cities to organise their cultural days in the Russian city as well as St. Petersburg cultural day in Vietnam’s cities.

He also suggested the opening of Vietnam’s Consulate in St. Petersburg.

NA Chairman Trong also met with the city’s Deputy Governor Yuri V. Molchanov on the same day, where the St. Petersburg official expressed wish to boost multifaceted cooperation with Vietnam.

Bilateral trade turnover, despite recent increases, failed to match the two sides’ potential, the deputy governor said, adding that his city is willing to cooperate with Vietnam in energy production, education and training.

NA Chairman Trong agreed that together with boosting economic, trade, investment cooperation, the two countries’ localities should also promote cultural, educational and tourism cooperation.

St. Petersburg has set up ties with Ho Chi Minh City, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Hai Phong, Khanh Hoa cities and is going to enter a similar agreement with the capital city of Hanoi.
