Vietnam will continue to support Thailand in carrying out its responsibilities as the chair of ASEAN, a senior government official said last Saturday.

Pham Quang Vinh, Assistant to the Foreign Minister and head of the Vietnam delegation to the ASEAN Senior Official Meetings (ASEAN SOM), made the statement while answering Vietnamese reporters’ questions relating to the postponement of the ASEAN summit meetings with partners in Pattaya, Thailand.

Vinh expressed regret at the postponement, adding that Vietnam sympathizes with the neighboring country, Vietnam News Agency reported.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has expressed his sympathies at the strife in the host country, and hopes Thailand would soon achieve stability and successfully undertake the responsibility of ASEAN presidency, the government’s website Sunday quoted Vinh as saying.

The ASEAN summit meetings with its partners including China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand were expected to take place from April 10-12.

Dung led the Vietnamese delegation to attend the conference. The delegation planned to exchange views with other countries’ leaders on policies and measures to strengthen the ASEAN community and the regional bloc’s cooperation with partners, particularly in overcoming impacts of the ongoing economic and financial crisis.

The Vietnamese delegation returned to Hanoi last Saturday.
