Communist Party of Vietnam General Secretary Nong Duc Manh has called on Hau Giang provincial leaders to put farmers at the centre of its rural economy strategy in line with a Party resolution on new-styled countryside.

VietNamNet Bridge - Communist Party of Vietnam General Secretary Nong Duc Manh has called on Hau Giang provincial leaders to put farmers at the centre of its rural economy strategy in line with a Party resolution on new-styled countryside.

The Party leader made the instruction during his working visit to the five-year-old province in the Mekong Delta on May 9-10, reminding them of the Party’s targets to build a civilized and modern country in both material and cultural lives.

“Efforts towards a new-styled countryside should start right in every commune, focusing on planning schemes to cover residential quarters, traffic systems, markets, medical wards, electric supply systems and industrial zones,” said Manh.

He told the provincial leaders to speed up rural modernization plans such as mechanisation, electrification and large-scaled irrigation while applying technical advances and bio-technology into production on a large-scale.

“Hau Giang should cash in on its fisheries strength in a way that can generate quality and environmental-friendly products,” the national leader urged.

The Party chief did not forget to call on the provincial Party leadership to constantly consolidate the Party unity, increase the political system’s strength and maintain national security and defence.

“Efforts should be made to promote grassroots democracy, encourage criticism and self-criticism in line with the Party’s regulations and well manage Party members in an effort to avoid corruption and wastefulness,” he emphasised.

Hau Giang, founded five years ago, is among the country’s most dynamic provinces with annual growth estimated at 12.28 percent on average while per-capita annual incomes almost doubled to close to 10.8 million VND in 2008 from over 5 million VND in 2004.

The province has managed to promote several key trademarks on the national scale, including “Nam Roi” pomelo, “That lat” fish and “Hau Giang 2” rice. It produces more than 1 million tonnes of commodity rice each year, in addition to 20,000 tonnes of seacooking exports worth 50 million USD.

The province has also set up two industrial zones.

During his trip in the Mekong Delta province, the Party leader visited and presented gifts to Huynh Thi Thiet, 95, whose husband and two sons laid down their lives for the nation during the war against US aggressors. He visited some former revolutionary bases and economic establishments as well.
