President receives Japanese, Slovakian foreign ministers

LookAtVietnam – President Nguyen Minh Triet on May 25 received the Japanese and Slovakian foreign ministers who are in Hanoi for the 9th Asia-Europe (ASEM) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (FMM).

During his meeting with Japanese foreign minister Hirofumi Nakasone, President Triet expressed his pleasure at the development of the Vietnamese – Japanese relationship over the past few years. He said that both countries’ joint efforts to overcome recent obstacles to their relationship have confirmed that their leaders and peoples always trust in each other.

The Vietnamese State and people are always upbeat about a bright future for Vietnam and Japan ’s relationship, Triet said, adding that the attendance of the Japanese minister at the meeting expresses the Japanese government’s regard for the ASEM FMM as well as its relationship with Vietnam .

The State President thanked the Japanese government and people for their support to Vietnam , especially the great effects its official development assistance (ODA) has had on the country’s development.

On this occasion, President Triet praised the cooperation programmes between Japan and countries in the Mekong region. Vietnam plans to organise numerous cultural exchanges in response to the 2009 Mekong – Japan Exchange Year, he added.

For his part, spoke highly of Vietnam ’s important role in the world’s arena, adding that Japan wants to work with Vietnam to solve the problems facing the United Nations (UN) as they are both currently non-permanent members of the UN Security Council.

On receiving Slovakian foreign minister Miroslav Lajcak, President Triet said that Vietnam wants to strengthen its friendship and comprehensive cooperation with Slovakia .

He suggested that the Slovakian government should assist Vietnam to penetrate the European Union market and resolve current difficulties in the Vietnam – EU relationship.

He went on to thank the Slovakian government for supporting Vietnamese expatriates living and working in the country.

President Triet said Vietnam wants to boost cooperation in trade and investment with Slovakia , adding that Vietnam will create the best possible conditions for Slovakia to get its investment projects in Vietnam up and running.

Minister Miroslav Lajcak confirmed that Slovakia wants to develop its close friendship and cooperation with Vietnam further.

Slovakia always supports Vietnam during talks with the EU over the Framework Agreement on Partnership and Comprehensive Cooperation, said the minister.

He also stressed that Slovakia wants to promote cooperation in trade and education with Vietnam , adding that his country is considering granting scholarships to Vietnamese students.

On the occasion, Miroslav Lajcak passed on greetings from the Slovakian President Ivan Gasparovic to the Vietnamese President. He noted that his President is waiting for President Triet to visit him at the end of this year, which is expected to bring the two countries’ friendship and cooperation to a new height.
