The meeting brought together police commanders from 10 ASEANAPOL member countries, namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, delegates from ASEAN dialogue partners - Japan, China, the Republic of Korea, Australia and New Zealand - as well as representatives from the Interpol, the ASEAN and ASEAN embassies in Hanoi.

Vietnamese Minister of Public Security General Le Hong Anh, who holds the association’s rotating presidency, delivered an opening remark, saying that this year’s conference is expected to help strengthen ASEANAPOL’s apparatus and seek ways to standardise police forces in all of its member countries.

The event also aims to beef up cooperation among regional police forces, including the building of an information centre for trans-national crimes, thus improving the efficiency of the fight against crimes in each country and the whole region at large, the minister said.

During the course of the two-day conference, the participants will discuss cooperation in fighting drug and human trafficking, terrorism, weapon smuggling, as well as financial, banking, hi-tech, and trans-national crimes.

The conference will also consider the establishment of a secretariat for ASEANAPOL, judicial support among the member countries, and a number of projects to increase cooperation with the dialogue partners.
