VietNamNet Bridge - National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong stated that his recent European tour has helped to cement Vietnam’s partnership with Russia and its traditional ties and multi-faceted cooperation with the Czech Republic and Belarus.

In an interview with the Vietnam News Agency (VNA), Trong, who visited the countries from April 22-30, said that leaders from the three countries had praised Vietnam for its achievements during the renewal process and its high standing in regional and international arenas.

He highlighted the signing of cooperation deals with his counterparts from all three countries.

“In Russia, we signed an agreement with the Senate, making it the second of its kind following the one we signed previously with the Lower House. In Belarus, we made agreements with both legislative bodies while in the Czech Republic we reached a consensus with the National Assembly ,” said Trong.

When asked about the legislative cooperation as well as the NA’s role in developing overall relations with the three countries, he said that the newly-signed accords of cooperation underlined the respect these countries have for Vietnam and their desire to develop friendship, mutual understanding and bilateral cooperation.

“The agreements spotlight just how important working together on legislation is to developing multi-faceted cooperation between the countries both individually and collectively, said Trong.

The signatories pledged to boost legislative ties to promote bilateral cooperation in all fields, ranging from politics to economics, trade, investment, science-technology, the environment, education, culture, society and tourism.

All three European legislative bodies agreed to tighten supervision over the implementation of the signed accords. They acknowledged that the progress made in carrying out the cooperation accords, was slow and needed a prod from all the legislatures concerned.

All the parties agreed to increase top-level exchanges as well as visits between committees, groups of parliamentarians and individual members of parliament.

The host legislative bodies also pledged to help train National Assembly Deputies and aides.

He then mentioned a number of cordial meetings with overseas Vietnamese during his visits, whom he called “special voters”.

“I think meeting these groups made the visit even more successful as the Vietnamese communities in these countries are quite large, especially in Russia and the Czech Republic,” emphasised the NA leader.

During his meetings, many overseas Vietnamese asked about a large number of issues, not only those related to themselves but also to developments at home.

“Expatriates are greatly concerned about education, healthcare and keeping the Vietnamese cultural identity intact and even the recent news about bauxite mining in Dac Nong province was mentioned,” he revealed.

He said they also explained to him how the impact of the global economic crisis had affected their jobs and standards of living.

“We discussed with their host countries what would be the best way of solving the current situation to help the overseas Vietnamese have a stable life, whether they choose to stay on or return to the home countries,” the top lawmaker concluded.
