LookAtVietnam – The Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives’ recent decision that calls on the Department of State to list Viet Nam as a “country of particular concern” regarding religion goes against the actual situation in Viet Nam,

Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesman Le Dung.

It also “does not conform to the developing relations between Viet Nam and the United States,” he added while responding to a question about Viet Nam’s reaction to the Amendment of US Bill H.R. 2410 on the Foreign Relations Authorisation Act, Fiscal Years 2010-2011.

“In Viet Nam, freedom of belief and religion is clearly stipulated in the country’s Constitution and practice,” he said.

“The State cares for and facilitates the development of religions in Viet Nam. Viet Nam’s laws strictly prohibit all kinds of discrimination against citizens on belief and religious grounds,” Dung said.

He confirmed that no one was detained on the grounds of religion - and that those who violated the law were treated in accordance with Vietnamese laws.

“It is my view that the best way to bridge the differences between the two sides is through candid and constructive dialogue with mutual understanding and respect.

“In this spirit, we always welcome US congressmen to Viet Nam to enhance mutual understanding and urge them not to pass this Amendment,” Dung concluded.
