Vietnam does not in any way threaten the security of the international community, the country’s defense minister said at a conference on foreign affairs and national defense in the Asia-Pacific region in Singapore.

“Vietnam hasn’t entered any military alliances, does not allow any foreign military bases to be built in the country and does not participate in any arms races. We are gradually modernizing our army and strengthening our defensive structure in order to defend our country,” General Phung Quang Thanh stated at the conference on Sunday.

In regards to Vietnam’s policy in the East Sea, Thanh said that Vietnam always tries to settle territorial conflicts by “peaceful means in accordance with international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.”

The three-day conference wrapped up Sunday.
