Vietnam expects more ODA from RoK

LookAtVietnam – Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has asked the Republic of Korea (RoK) to expand its official development assistance (ODA) to Vietnam.

Talking with the host President, Lee Myung-bak in Seoul on May 30, PM Dung also suggested the RoK facilitate Vietnam ’s exports in order to gradually change the bilateral trade unbalance.

PM Dung affirmed that Vietnam sees the RoK as one of the top important partners, saying he hopes the two countries would together exert efforts to make their cooperation in politics, economy, diplomacy, national security and defence as well as culture, education and environmental protection deeper, more stable and effective towards a strategic partnership.

President Lee Myung-bak said the RoK has attached importance to developing the cooperation with Vietnam . He praised the results of the May 29 talks between PM Dung and his RoK counterpart Han Seung-soo, particularly their agreement on principle to bring the Vietnam-RoK relationship to the “Strategic Partnership” for peace, stability and development in the region and the world.

Regarding the situation on the Korean Peninsula , PM Dung said Vietnam always wishes for peace and stability on the peninsula and the country’s consistent policy is to support the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninisula, protest nuclear tests and nuclear weapon proliferation. He said Vietnam supports a process to deal with the nuclear issues through peaceful dialogues and negotiations.

PM Dung conveyed President Nguyen Minh Triet’s invitation for a Vietnam official visit to President Lee Myung-bak.

Prime Minister meets RoK NA Speaker

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung met with the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea (RoK), Kim Hyong-o, on May 30 as part of his official visit to the country to attend a summit to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of ASEAN-RoK dialogue relations.

At the meeting, Speaker Kim appreciated the RoK official visit by PM Dung, stressing that it contributes to boosting the relationship between the two countries.

He expressed his wish to strengthen the relations between the two countries in general and the two NAs in particular, saying he believed the relations would further develop in the future.

PM Dung said Vietnam values the comprehensive cooperation with the RoK, and expressed his hope that the NA Speaker and other MPs would contribute more to developing the bilateral relationship.

PM Dung and his host shared a view that the ties between the two NAs, the exchange between the two countries’ people, particularly the young generation, is an important factor helping to broaden the trust and mutual understanding between the two countries.

They also hailed the role of the Vietnamese community in the RoK and the RoK community in Vietnam, saying they serve as a bridge for the two nations.

The two leaders agreed that the two countries should pay attention to and protect the legitimate interests of their overseas communities.

PM Dung conveyed the invitation for a Vietnam visit from NA Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong to his RoK counterpart Kim.
