Vietnam joins the international community in its commitment to supporting the peace and development process on which the Nepalese people and government have embarked.

Ambassador Bui The Giang, Vietnamese deputy representative to the UN Security Council, made the statement in New York on May 5 at a private council debate about Nepal.

The diplomat acknowledged the relative overall calm and stable security situation in Nepal as well as positive political developments made during the peace process, particularly those related to the drafting of the Constitution, the operation of the Special Committee and the establishment of the Technical Committee.

“We call upon all political parties to exercise restraints and give top priority to stability by promoting national unity and resuming dialogues in the spirit of compromise to expedite the peace process,” Giang said.

He also expressed his hope that all parties in the Government of Nepal would continue working together for the common good of the entire nation.

Underlining the role played by the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) in the country’s peace process, Ambassador Giang commended the Mission for its efforts in the field of arms monitoring and supporting the work of the Special and Technical Committees in the past reporting period.

“We reaffirm our support for the role of the United Nations in coordinating international development assistance to Nepal,” he said in conclusion.

At the debate, the UNSC approved a Presidential Statement on the current political crisis in Nepal.
