Singaporean Foreign Minister George Yeo believes Vietnam will soon overcome the effects of the global economic crisis.

Yeo, who is visiting Vietnam to attend the 9th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Hanoi this week, made the statement Friday during talks with Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem.

While praising Vietnam’s socio-economic development in recent years, he said Singapore valued its relationship with Vietnam and wanted to continue enhancing long- term links with the Southeast Asian country.

Deputy PM Khiem said Singapore was one of Vietnam’s leading trade and investment partners and asked the Singaporean government continue encouraging its businesses to increase their investment in Vietnam and facilitate the import of Vietnamese products.

Both sides said they were satisfied with the implementation of the Vietnam-Singapore Connection Agreement.

The two ministers said they were pleased with the effective cooperation between the two foreign ministries. They agreed to boost cooperation with their fifth political consultation and the first full exchange between the two foreign ministries in Hanoi later this year.

After the talks, Khiem and his Singaporean guest witnessed the signing of a tripartite memorandum of understanding between the Singapore Institute for Asian Competition and the Central Institute for Economic Management and the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
