The State of Vietnam respects and supports the programmmes of the international progressive lawyers’ circle, working for peace, justice and development, said State President Nguyen Minh Triet.

The 17th Congress of the International Association of Democratic Lawyers (IADL) on the theme of “Law and lawyers in the context of globalisation for peace, development and the independence of the judiciary” opened in Hanoi on June 6.

This is the first time such a congress has been held in an Asian country with the participation of representatives and IADL lawyers.

In his opening speech, IADL Chairman Jitendra Sharma reviewed the outstanding activities run by the IADL since its 16th congress held in Paris in June 2005 and said Vietnam, where the 17th IADL is being held, is a country which holds an important position in the hearts of progressive democratic lawyers.

State President Triet said that the congress provides a good opportunity for Vietnamese and international lawyers to promote mutual understanding, solidarity, and cooperation as a contribution to preventing conflicts and crises, reconciling wars and driving back poverty thus bringing a prosperous life to the people.

The 17th IADL Congress in Hanoi affirms that the State of Vietnam respects and supports the programmmes of the progressive lawyers’ circle, working for peace, justice and development around the world. Vietnam always pays attention to global legal issues for peace, stability and anti-terrorism while supporting the development and protection of human rights, protecting the environment and ensuring social welfare, said Mr Triet.

Through this significant event, the Party, State, people and the lawyers’ circle of Vietnam want to express their gratitude towards IADL and International lawyers who have supported Vietnam in its struggle for national defense and now in the cause of national construction and development.

On the occasion, Mr Triet also thanked and praised IADL for holding the International Court of Conscience in May to gather voices in support of Vietnamese victims of Agent Orange and Dioxin.

The 17th IADL congress is being held from June 6-10 and focuses on six topics, including the right to peace; anti-terrorism law; the independence of the judiciary; globalisation and economic, social and cultural rights; development and environmental rights; and accountability for international crimes.
