LookAtVietnam – Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung yesterday, June 14, launched a nationwide emulation movement to mark the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Ha Noi next year.

PM Nguyen Tan Dung announces the launch of a nation-wide emulation movement yesterday.

The announcement also marked the day, June 11, 61 years ago when late President Hb Chi Minh made an appeal for a patriotic movement.

Dung said over the past 61 years, the Party, State and all citizens had upheld the traditions of solidarity and patriotic spirit to overcome difficulties for the development of the country.

“Patriotic emulation movements have developed among people of all walks of life and in every sector, creating momentum and huge strength for the national construction and development process,” Dung said.

Inheriting and upholding the ideas of late President Ho Chi Minh, the Central Emulation and Reward Council launched this special movement for the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Ha Noi, he said.

In order to improve the efficiency of the movement, the PM urged relevant ministries and agencies to bring the strength and solidarity of the entire society into play and to link emulation activities with the effective implementation of Party and State resolutions on socio-economic development and measures to prevent economic decline, maintain economic growth and ensure social security.

“The emulation movement must contribute to dealing with issues related to prevention of corruption and wastefulness, administrative reform, cultural and social development, poverty reduction and the prevention of national calamities and diseases. It must also focus on environmental protection, cooking hygiene and safety, traffic accident reduction and ensuring national defence and security and social order,” he said.

Relevant ministries and agencies were also required to speed up information dissemination about the movement to mobilise the participation of all citizens.

They were asked to ensure the quality and progress of construction projects for the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Ha Noi celebrations in line with PM guidelines.

Dung asked relevant ministries and agencies and the Ha Noi People’s Committee to effectively organise the movement for the anniversary programme.

The Government leader required relevant ministries and agencies to finalise any legal regulations and rewards on emulation and to raise public awareness of the great effects of late President Ho Chi Minh’s emulation idea through an information campaign.

Dung said Ha Noi needed to uphold its tradition of being a cradle of many revolutionary movements and to continue speeding up emulation movements as the anniversary was nearing.

“Celebrating the capital’s 1,000th birthday requires practical activities that link with socio-economic development,” he said.

Ha Noi should lead the country in every field, focusing on measures to prevent economic decline, maintain reasonable economic growth, ensure social security. Anniversary celebration projects completed as scheduled, cultural development boosted and a “green-clean-beautiful” city built for introduction to foreign friends about the cultural tradition of Thang Long-Ha Noi.

The PM called on people and soldiers nationwide to speed up patriotic emulation movements and make more achievements with practical activities to celebrate this great historical event.

Reviewing the outcomes of the emulation movement in 2008, Dung said it made great contributions to the achievements of last year.

Regarding the economy, Dung said inflation and the trade deficit were basically kept under control, the macro-economy maintained stable and the credit network safety ensured while the economy posted a growth rate of 6.2 per cent.

In spite of difficulties, social welfare and security were still ensured, he said. Progress was made in poverty reduction, with the poverty rate dropping to 12.5 per cent in 2008 from 14.8 per cent in 2007.

The country also made progress in implementing education and health care policies, administrative reform and anti-corruption, and in ensuring national defence and security, and social order, Dung said.

At the launching ceremony, the Central Emulation and Reward Council presented Government emulation flags to 60 units.

Every June 11 is taken Traditional Patriotic Emulation Movement Day.
