PM suggests cooperation committee to Saudi Arabia; Vietnam, Cambodia speed up border demarcation; Vietnam, RoK talk expat issues; Vietnam hails peace progress in Burundi

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung suggested to the visiting Saudi Arabian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Ali Ibrahim Al Naimi, that both countries establish a cooperation committee.

Receiving the minister in Hanoi on June 10, Dung praised the results of talks between the Saudi Arabian Minister and Minister of Industry and Trade Vu Huy Hoang and leaders of the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam).

Vietnam wishes to cooperate with Saudi Arabia as well as all other countries on the basis of equality and mutual benefit, said PM Dung, adding that the country hopes to soon welcome other Saudi Arabian ministers.

He also suggested that both countries should establish a cooperation committee.

For his part, Minister Al Naimi expressed his good impressions of Vietnam during his first visit to the country. He confirmed that besides the oil and gas industry, Saudi Arabia wishes to boost strategic cooperation with Vietnam in other fields such as agriculture, trade, construction and services.

He said that he believed several other Saudi Arabian ministers will visit Vietnam in the near future to expand relations between the two countries.

During his talks with the Vietnamese Minister of Industry and Trade and the heads of PetroVietnam on June 9, both parties agreed to draw up a strategic alliance on oil and gas development. In the immediate future, Saudi Arabia will provide Vietnam with crude oil.

Vietnam, Cambodia speed up border demarcation

The Chairmen of the Vietnam-Cambodia Joint Committee for Border Demarcation and Marker Planting met in Siem Riep, Cambodia , on June 8-9 to discuss measures to speed up the progress of land border demarcation and market planting.

The Vietnamese delegation to the meeting was led by Deputy Foreign Minister Ho Xuan Son, chairman of the Vietnam-Cambodia joint border committee; and the Cambodian delegation was headed by Senior Minister Var Kim Hong, chairman of the Cambodia-Vietnam border committee.

In an atmosphere of friendship and mutual understanding, the two sides discussed ways of addressing important marker positions along the Vietnam-Cambodia land border and reviewed the implementation of agreements previously reached by the two countries at the third session of the joint committee in Ho Chi Minh City in March this year.

They proposed measures to accelerate the pace of demarcation and marker planting work, including Vietnam ’s plan to train cartographers for Cambodia .

The two sides agreed to ensure the complementation of border management regulations and maintain stability in border areas during border demarcation and market planting.

Prior to the chairmen’s meeting, the 8 th session of the Joint Technical Working Group and the 10 th session of the committee’s mapping group took place in Phnom Penh between June 1-6.

Vietnam, RoK talk expat issues

Deputy Foreign Minister and Chairman of the State Commission on Overseas Vietnamese Nguyen Thanh Son concluded a four-day working visit to the Republic of Korea on June 10.

During his stay in the RoK, Deputy Minister Son discussed the issues of bilateral ties, overseas Vietnamese and consulate with RoK Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Shin Kae-soo.

Son also worked with Assistant to RoK Foreign Minister in charge of expats and consular issues Lee Jun-kyu.

The Vietnamese diplomat shared his experiences with President of the RoK Overseas Fund Kwon Young-kon about how to assist and mobilise the overseas community.

He held a working session with the Vietnamese Labour Management Department in the RoK and the Guest Workers Assistance Centre under the RoK Labour Ministry. He inquired into the RoK’s policies on guest workers and other issues relating to Vietnamese workers in the country.

The deputy minister also talked with hundreds of Vietnamese youths who are working in the RoK under the Employment Permit System (EPS) programme.

At his working session, Son informed his host of the Vietnamese Party, State and government’s policy on overseas Vietnamese.

He said that his Commission would organise the first conference for overseas Vietnamese around the world in Hanoi to mark the 50 th anniversary of the commission’s establishment.

Vietnam hails peace progress in Burundi

A Vietnamese diplomat has applauded the remarkable progress in Burundi’s peace process, especially the rebel group FNL’s disarmament and the establishment of a roadmap for the peace process in Burundi.

Representative of Vietnam to the UN Security Council, Ambassador Le Luong Minh, made the remark while attending the council’s session on June 9 to discuss the situation in Burundi as well as operations of the UN Integrated Office in Burundi (BINUB).

The ambassador called upon all parties concerned in Burundi to firmly adhere to the peace and political process and promote cooperation to resolve the outstanding issues.

He highly appreciated the Burundian Government’s efforts in preparing for the 2010 elections and urged the UN and international community to continue supporting Burundi in addressing the current challenges to its political process, socio-economic recovery and development.

Minh also praised the contributions made by the African Union, regional countries and the Peace-building Commission (PBC) to the consolidation of Burundi ’s peace process, saying that by continued engagement and enhanced coordination, regional and international partners will facilitate the stabilization process in the country.

The Vietnamese representative suggested that the BINUB focus on peace-building activities and facilitating long-term development in Burundi.
