President Nguyen Minh Triet said the HCM City government and citizens need to have more effective dialogue in the spirit of respecting the law with trust and constructive attitude.

President Nguyen Minh Triet meets with HCM City’s voters.

Speaking with voters at a meeting in HCM City on June 23 to inform them about the result of the fifth National Assembly session, the President thanked HCM City voters for their opinions which have contributed to the success of the NA session.

“Many opinions aimed at building laws and completing policies have been incorporated into draft laws and resolutions,” he said.

HCM City voters had raised 245 opinions on various issues before the session was held.

A significant number of proposals put forward in previous sessions were seen again in the latest session due to citizens not being satisfied with the way in which local authorities had been implementing legislation.

Many voters, for instance, disagreed with current compensation and resettlement policies for such projects as the Thu Thiem new urban area and the East-West Highway.

Triet said HCM City’s NA delegation had held serious talks with city leaders to define responsibility and give specific timeframes for relevant agencies to solve these pressing issues.

He asked city authorities take into account citizens’ suggestions in order to solve problems and create legislation that citizens would accept and follow.

Triet noted that issues which kept recurring were mainly due to the fact that the local government and citizens did not have an effective dialogue in order to come up with mutually-acceptable solutions.

He told citizens that projects on bauxite mining in Tay Nguyen (the Central Highlands), and raising the strength of marine and island defence forces were vital issues which needed careful consideration with appropriate steps, high levels of consensus and long-term visioning.
