Chairman of the Viet Nam Association for Victims of AO/Dioxin Nguyen Van Rinh said he hoped the new US administration would have more positive measures for easing the pain of dioxin victims.

“The pains experienced by victims of AO/dioxin are mankind’s pains. The Vietnamese victims’ struggle for justice is not only for them, but for all victims in other countries, including US, Australian, New Zealand and South Korean war veterans,” Rinh said.

Relations between Viet Nam and the US have developed well in recent years. To develop these relations even more for world peace and for the benefit of both countries, they should strive to wipe out the AO tragedy - “the last ghost of the Viet Nam war”, he added.

The hearing will include information about US assistance for AO victims, the human and environmental consequences of AO/dioxin currently in Viet Nam.

Before the hearing today, chairman of the Sub-committee on Asia, Pacific and the Global Environment Eni Faleomavaega called for measures from both countries to help Vietnamese AO/dioxin victims.

The Vietnamese AO/dioxin victims filed a lawsuit five years ago against American chemical companies for spraying AO across Vietnamese land during the war but they did not win their struggle in the court system.

The first hearing was held last May in the House Committee for Foreign Affairs.
