President Nguyen Minh Triet on Thursday called on the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to stay close and fight for the noble goals that it has pursued since its beginning.

He also urged them to strictly observe the organization’s principles of respecting national sovereignty, noninterference in each other’s internal affairs, enhancing friendship, refraining from deploying force or the threat of force in international relations, and solving international disputes through peaceful negotiations.

Addressing the 15th NAM Summit in the Egyptian city of Sharm-el-Sheikh he said the meeting represented the aspirations for peace held by all NAM member nations.

For its part, Vietnam values its relations with the NAM and will focus on expanding ties with its member nations in various fields including agriculture, healthcare and education, he said.

Vietnam also looks to exchange development experiences with NAM nations, he added.

As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Vietnam has given the highest priority to the prevention of conflicts and the peaceful handling of disputes in line with the UN Charter and international legal norms, the president noted.

He suggested that NAM work more closely with the UN and other international organizations to effectively implement stimulus measures, fight protectionism and reform the international financial and economic system.

Triet went on to say that the south-south cooperation should focus on practical activities, expand trade ties and exchange experiences in dealing with new challenges arising out of the development process.
