Representatives from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed Triet at Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport.

Triet is expected to hold talks with participating high-ranking leaders of several countries during the summit to boost bilateral relations.

This year’s summit, which begins today, is being held under the theme of “Solidarity for Peace and Development ” and aims to review the international situation and issues of mutual concern, as well as discuss measures to respond to the world economic crisis and other global challenges, such as climate change and cooking securities.

The meeting will also put forward plans for political, economic and social co-operation to realise NAM targets, as well as consider and approve proposals recommended by the NAM Foreign Ministers Meeting held in Havana, Cuba, in April of this year.

Since its accession to NAM, Viet Nam has attended all of its summits and foreign ministers meetings and worked closely with NAM partners to consolidate solidarity and enhance the movement’s role in striving for peace, national independence, democracy and social progress.

Established in 1961, NAM has increased its membership from just 25 nations to 118, becoming the world’s second largest multilateral organisation after the UN.

Triet is attending the current summit at the invitation of its host, Egyptian President Muhammad Hosni Mubarak.
