LookAtVietnam – The Ha Noi authorities will check up on anti-corruption efforts at 18 administrative units from now to October.

From the first seven months of the year, property worth VND487.16 billion was involved in corruption charges.

According to the municipal Steering Committee for Corruption Prevention and Control, people’s committees in nine districts will be examined, including Hoan Kiem, Hoang Mai, Ha Dong, Ba Vi, Thach That, Quoc Oai, My Duc, Me Linh and Ung Hoa.

The nine sectors to be checked are the city’s departments of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Customs, and Taxation; the Housing Development and Investment and Corporation; the key project management units, the Youth Union; the Investment and Development Fund, the State Treasury and the State Bank.

Deputy head of the Steering Committee Dao Xuan Mui said the move was being made to boost the sense of responsibility by officials in lighting corruption.

The examination was also designed to evaluate implementation of the Law on Corruption Prevention, and assess any difficulties units faced in executing legal documents on anti-corruption, he said.

“The committee will focus on checking the progress of petition response, site clearance, basic construction projects, and the issuing of land-use right certificates,” said Mui.

“One of the most pressing and long-term tasks of municipal authorities is to combat corruption,” he said.

“Tackling graft is not just the job of relevant steering committees, it is the responsibility of the entire social and political system.”

To strengthen the move, mass media agencies in the city would focus on creating dissemination campaigns to increase public awareness.

Little interest

Mui said the move would also concentrate on checking progress in dealing with corruption cases, of which only 12 had been resolved and 35 were still on hold.

From the first seven months of the year, property worth VND487.16 billion (US$27.06 million) was involved in corruption charges.

According to Mui, the delay in some cases was due to weak communication between relevant agencies.

“Also, the dissemination campaign on anti-corruption is not interesting and attractive enough to rouse the masses to action,” he said.
