The country’s largest city presently has 78,000 government staffs, 2000 more than the government-permitted level. Local departments have suggested cutting 851 employees.

According to the HCM City Department of Home Affairs, nine of 43 departments and 13 districts have finalised their lists of government employees who would be fired, including 58 people from departments and 793 people from district-level agencies.

The HCM City People’s Council said that the number of HCM City government employees is always higher than the government’s policy. The city currently uses 78,000 state employees compared to the permitted number of 76,000. The city wants to increase the number to 80,000 in 2010.

The local Department of Home Affairs said that the annual rise of staff number, mainly for the education and health sectors, is to meet the city’s requirements for economic and social development.
