The Japanese government has decided to provide a preferential loan of JPY65 billion (US$683 million) to Vietnam for the first half of its financial year (April 1 to September 30).

The Japanese embassy in Hanoi last week said that Ambassador Sakaba Mitsuo had informed Minister of Planning and Investment Vo Hong Phuc of the decision.

According to the embassy, the two governments will proceed with all necessary procedures including the exchanging of diplomatic notes for using the funds.

Major infrastructure projects that will be implemented with the loan include the renovation of a bridge on National Highway 1 and phase 1 of the Thai Binh 1 power plant.
