Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has asked Ca Mau, the country’s southernmost province, to boost shrimp farming on an industrial scale to at least 20,000 hectares to make better use of its fisheries potential.

The government leader also spoke to provincial leaders during his visit Monday to intensify investment in transport infrastructure and irrigation networks to ensure sustainable agricultural development.

“Ca Mau should focus on education and healthcare as well as speed up the currently slow tempo of capital disbursements,” he said.

Dung pledged to consider the province’s proposals and make final decisions as soon as possible to help it overcome difficulties.

The government leader also paid a visit to the Ca Mau Gas, Electricity and Fertilizer Industrial Zone to observe the operations of two new electricity plants.

“The two power plants have made a considerable contribution to the national energy strategy and helped the nation overcome a power shortage in the recent past,” he said.

He called for greater efforts to be made to speed up the construction of a nitrogenous fertilizer factory, as well as caring for the social welfare of the local population.

The PM urged the project investor, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group, known as PetroVietnam, to focus on promoting employment, especially for young people of working age from over 220 families displaced by the project.
