Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has asked the investor of a major alumina plant construction project not to damage the local environment during construction.

Speaking at the construction site Tuesday, Dung said the Tan Rai bauxite-aluminum project would play a key role in industrializing and modernizing the country.

In addition to protecting the environment, he said taking better care of the people displaced by the project would be necessary.

He asked the investor to ensure progress unfolded according to schedule.

The alumina plant, located in the Central Highlands province of Lam

Dong’s Bao Lam District, is scheduled to open by the middle of next year to generate annual revenue of US$180 million.

On the same day, the prime minister also attended a ceremony at which 26 houses worth VND78 million (nearly US$4,400) each, were handed to ethnic minority communities at the project’s resettlement area.
