Vietnam will strive to be among the world’s 70 leading countries in information technology and communication between 2015 and 2020, Minister of Information and Communication Le Doan Hop said Sunday.

In an online briefing on the national development strategy for information technology, Hop said concerned agencies would ensure every Vietnamese household and citizen would have access to broadband connections.

A project to make Vietnam a powerful country in telecommunications and information technology has been submitted to the government for approval, he said.

To realize the goals set out in the plan, Hop said many things would have to be done including the development of public broadband services, increased application of information technology in government agencies, development of human resources including hardware and software personnel, and expansion of outsourced work from multinational corporations.

Meanwhile, three Vietnamese students won a silver and two bronze medals at the International Informatics Olympiad 2009 that took place from August 8-15 in Bulgaria.

Nguyen Thanh An, a 12th grader at the Hanoi-Amsterdam School for the Gifted won the silver medal.

The two bronze medalists were Xuan Khanh, 11th grader from HCMC’s Nang Khieu School for the Gifted and Hoang Ngoc Hung, 12th grader of Lam Son High School for the Gifted in Thanh Hoa Province.
