The World Bank (WB) will loan Vietnam US$177 million to support the country’s efforts to improve its primary and higher education, according to a credit agreement signed in Hanoi last week.

Of the amount, $50 million will go toward developing Vietnam’s higher education sector, including strengthening governance and enhancing transparency in public financial management, the WB said in a statement.

“This new program will support the development of a modern higher education system, where universities and colleges have greater managerial autonomy but are also required to be more accountable for the quality of the services they provide,” said Jeffrey Waite, World Bank Lead Education Specialist for Vietnam.

The remaining $127 million will be invested in Vietnam’s School Education Quality Assurance Program, which will support the government’s full-day schooling reform program, according to the statement.

The funds will also help improve the program’s policy framework, human resources, and school facilities and resources.
