Huynh Dam (photo) and Vu Trong Kim were re-elected as chairman and vice chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) in a meeting on September 29 in Hanoi.

The 1st conference of the 7th VFF Central Committee also elected the VFF secretary general and vice secretaries general.

Huynh Dam, 61, from the southern province of Ca Mau is a bachelor of politics, law and economics. He previously assumed chairmanship of the HCM City People’s Council and vice chief of the HCM City party. He is now a member of the Party Central Committee.

The Vietnamese Fatherland Front, founded February 1977, represents wider people’s groups and their political input. It has a significant role in society, promoting national solidarity and “unity of mind” in political and spiritual matters. Many of the government’s social programs are conducted through the Front.

Recently, it has been given a role in programs to reduce poverty. The Front is also responsible for much of the government’s policy on religion.
