Vietnam has completed preparations for its second time assuming the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council this October.

The country’s tasks during the month will include preparing the UNSC’s annual report for submission to the UN General Assembly and the hosting the council’s session on women, peace and security, said Le Hoai Trung, Director of the Foreign Ministry’s Department for International Organisations.

The session is scheduled to be chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem.

Vietnam will soon announce the sessions’ contents to UNSC non-members, especially the ASEAN and Non-Aligned countries.

According to Trung, the 64^th session of the UN General Assembly was kicked off in New York on September 15 and the UN is preparing for the next session in 2010 as well as celebrating the 65^th anniversary of its establishment and the tenth year of the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

At the current session, the UN General Assembly will review more than 160 items, divided into nine fields including peace and international security, economic growth and sustainable development, development in Africa, human rights promotion, natural calamities and humanitarian assistance, justice and international law, as well as organisational and administrative issues.

A high-raking general debate among the assembly focusing on facing global crises and strengthening multilateralism and dialogues among civilisations for peace, international security and development is slated for September 23-30.
