President Nguyen Minh Triet arrived in New York on September 24 to attend the UN Security Council’s Summit and the general debate of the 64th UN General Assembly.

President Triet was welcomed at JFK airport by Permanent Representative of the Vietnamese delegation to the United Nations, Ambassador Le Luong Minh, Ambassador to the US, Le Cong Phung and members of the Vietnamese delegation to the UN and embassy staff.

At 6 am (Hanoi time), Mr Triet attended a banquet hosted by US President Barack Obama and his wife to welcome heads of delegations to the 64th session of the UN General Assembly.

The Vietnamese delegation, led by Mr Triet, is scheduled to attend a summit session of the UN Security Council on the “Non proliferation of nuclear weapons” and the general debate of the 64th UN General Assembly with the theme “Effective responses to global crises: strengthening multilateralism and dialogue among civilizations for international peace, security and development”.

Vietnam’s participation in these sessions shows its rising position in the global community. Vietnam’s unswerving policy of upholding peace and discouraging the arms races is demonstrated by its membership of all important multilateral treaties on the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Vietnam has been acclaimed by other UN member countries and the UN Secretary General for making a positive contribution to the UN as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2008-2009 term and successfully implementing its the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the “one UN” initiative in Vietnam to reform the UN’s development activities.

During his time attending the UN sessions, President Triet will meet with Heads of States and Governments, delegations from other countries and leaders from the UN and other international organisations to promote bilateral cooperation and deal with issues of international concern.
