Today, September 23, President Nguyen Minh Triet sets off for New York to attend the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Summit and the general debate of the 64th UN General Assembly session from September 23-25.

President Triet and his delegation will attend the UNSC Summit on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. He will also deliver a speech to the General Assembly and meet with top officials of other countries on the sideline.

Afterwards, he will visit Cuba and Chile from September 26 to October 1, 2009, at the invitations of the Cuban President of State Council and Minister Council, Raul Castro Ruz, and Chilean President Michelle Bachelet.

The 64th session of the UN General Assembly kicked off on September 15 to review over 160 items in nine topics, including peace and international security, economic growth and sustainable development, development in Africa, human rights promotion, natural calamities and humanitarian assistance, justice and international law, as well as organizational and administrative issues.

A high-raking general debate among the assembly focusing on facing global crises and strengthening multilateralism and dialogues among civilisations for peace, international security and development is slated for September 23-30.

The UNSC Summit and the 64th UN General Assembly session take place before Vietnam assumes the rotating presidency of the UNSC the second time in October 2009.

Vietnam’s tasks will include preparing the UNSC’s annual report and hosting the council’s session on women, peace and security. The session is scheduled to be chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem.
