Work began Monday on the new national parliament building in Hanoi.

The new National Assembly House, built at a cost of VND4.8 trillion (US$268.7 million), is expected to open in the third quarter of 2012.

The 39-meter-high square building will have seven floors, two of them underground, and a circular meeting room at its center. Located at the Ba Dinh Square, it will replace the old parliament which was built in 1961.

The new building is designed by Germany’s GMP International GmbH-Inros Lackner AG, which won the contest held to select the design for the new parliament.
